Beethoven’s hair reveals lead poisoning

CNN —Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” is one of the first songs I learned to play on the violin. While his doctor’s notes were lost to time, scientists sequenced Beethoven’s genome from locks of his hair last year. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesA new analysis of Beethoven’s hair has shown the composer experienced lead poisoning toward the end of his life. Tests revealed incredibly elevated levels of lead, as well as arsenic and mercury, in two of his locks, likely from drinking wine that was sweetened with lead. Researchers don’t believe lead poisoning would have been enough to kill him, but it could have contributed to the composer’s well-known gastrointestinal issues and deafness.

Opinion: Why Apple’s iPad ad hit such a nerve

Actors, directors, writers and academics expressed outrage at the Apple ad. Whatever their personal or political allegiances, many college students are seeing their experience on campus influenced by the Israel-Hamas war. Saltz: Parents can talk to their kids, but the talking needs to be more in the question format than in the lecture format. And so, people are having difficulty maintaining a friendship if they now somehow feel they’re not on the same team. Many of the kids out there doing the protests are not saying anything antisemitic. If so, I would advise you to seek some mental health care because it’s really hard to help your child if you’re undone.

Op-ed: My kids have credit cards and yours should, too

Now, my three kids — ages 15, 12 and 10 — have had credit cards since before they entered kindergarten. Adding your child as an authorized user on your credit cards can be a smart way to set them up for financial success. I keep my kids' credit cards safe and have shown my teen how to store his cards in his phone's Apple Pay. We pull my younger kids' credit cards out at least once a year to help pay for their expenses such as school PTA donations, tutoring costs and teachers' gifts. I even have them take their credit card to school to buy some items at the school book fair.

After a water leak damaged the flooring, my partner and I decided to remodel most of our house. We've also decided to do it ourselves while still living in it, which has caused some issues. We have had a blast learning new skills and teaching our kids that anything worth having is worth the hard work. It may have started as a leak, but we've always wanted to make the house our own. Together, we're making a home we can be proud to call our own and making memories the kids will never forget.

She encourages physical independence by having her kids walk home from school, a distance of about three blocks. The school was somewhat skeptical, but when Oster explained why the kids would be walking, they acquiesced. In addition, Oster doesn't drop off items her kids forget at home, like cleats for practice or a school folder.

CNN —It feels weird to begin a complimentary piece about Anne Hathaway by saying I didn’t especially enjoy her latest movie, but here goes. Yet, as she recently explained to the New York Times, she’s spent far too much of her life trying to make other people happy. Even now, a Google search for “hate Anne Hathaway” produces more than five million hits. The movie is set years after that betrayal, and Solène, like Hathaway, has outgrown her habit of people pleasing. Hathaway is so luminously beautiful in “The Idea of You” that, for me at least, it undermines the entire film.

Every Gala has a dress code, which is tethered to the exhibition. All of which makes it easy to forget this is actually an important fund-raiser for one of New York’s cultural pillars: the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It was once a free-standing museum, but when it merged with the Met in 1946, part of the deal was that the Costume Institute would have to pay for itself. Hence the gala, which raises all the funds for the institute’s operating budget. The Costume Institute itself has historically been housed in the museum’s basement — a clear statement about its status at the museum.

CNN —The political rawness of the moment, as Israel pounds Gaza and outrage rocks American college campuses, means President Joe Biden’s big speech Tuesday condemning antisemitism is most notable for what he left unsaid. The speech was closely watched given the turmoil in the Middle East and its stunning political reaction in the US. “My commitment to the safety of the Jewish people, the security of Israel, and its right to exist as an independent Jewish state is ironclad. While praising the right to free speech as a fundamental American value, he condemned reported instances when some Jewish students have faced antisemitic taunting. On Oct. 18, hundreds of Berkeley High School students, with the blessing of some of their teachers, left their classrooms in the middle of the day and gathered at a nearby park. Just as on the nearby campus of the University of California — famed since the 1960s for its marches, sit-ins and progressive ideals — students at Berkeley High have a long history of hitting the streets in dissent. In the 1960s, they walked out to oppose the Vietnam War. More recently, they have shown up in droves to advocate for Black Lives Matter, immigration reform, reproductive rights and L.G.B.T.Q. But this walkout reverberated in unexpected ways through the Berkeley public school system and the city’s ordinarily tight-knit community.
